PRIMARY MUSCLES
Rectus abdominis · Internal and external obliques
SUPPORTING MUSCLES
Transverse abdominis · Internal and external obliques · Spinal erectors · Gluteal muscles
Setup
- Kneel facing the high pulley with the rope beside the temples.
- Keep the hips above the knees and use the arms only to secure the rope.
- Choose a load that does not force the hips backward or the arms to pull.
Execution
- Keep the hips fixed and curl the rib cage toward the pelvis.
- Hold the rope beside the head without performing an arm pushdown.
- Contract the rectus abdominis briefly with a neutral neck.
- Open the torso for about three seconds without crashing the weight stack.
Breathing
- Inhale into the sides and back of the waist, then exhale as the ribs draw toward the pelvis and the abdomen braces.
- Continue breathing during the exercise instead of replacing core control with prolonged breath holding.
Common mistakes
- The hips sit toward the heels and turn the movement into a hip hinge.
- The arms and triceps pull the rope instead of curling the torso.
- The neck flexes excessively or the return crashes the weight stack.
Safety
- Begin with a range, repetition count, or hold time that preserves a neutral spine and normal breathing.
- Secure the bar, wheel, cable, rope, and mat and keep the surrounding area clear.
- Stop and seek qualified help for sharp pain, numbness, or dizziness involving the lower back, neck, shoulders, or abdomen.
