SUPPORTING MUSCLES
Trapezius · Serratus anterior · Rotator cuff · Core stabilizers
Setup
- Plant both feet, brace the abdomen and glutes, and keep the rib cage stacked over the pelvis.
- Position the load at the upper chest or beside the shoulders with vertical forearms and wrists stacked over elbows.
- Keep the shoulders away from the ears, avoid excessive elbow flare, and confirm that the neck and lower back are comfortable.
Execution
- Press the load along a stable path, moving the head back to neutral after the bar passes the forehead.
- Finish with the load over the body midline and straight arms without forceful elbow locking.
- Keep abdominal and glute tension instead of compensating with excessive lower-back extension.
- Lower for two to three seconds while keeping the elbows and wrists aligned.
Breathing
- Inhale and stabilize the abdomen and rib cage before starting without excessive breath holding.
- Exhale gradually while pressing, lifting, or pulling and inhale during the controlled return.
Common mistakes
- The lower back overarches, the ribs flare, or the knees bounce to move the load.
- The bar or dumbbells travel excessively in front of the body.
- The wrists bend excessively and the elbows do not align with the load.
- The load is lowered behind the neck or exceeds the controllable range.
Safety
- Shoulders are sensitive to load and angle; begin light and confirm a pain-free, pinch-free range.
- Secure the rack, bench, weight stack, and cable attachments; use safety pins for demanding barbell sets.
- Stop and seek qualified help for sharp pain, numbness, weakness, or a sense of shoulder instability.
